Gmail Annotation Setup

Gmail Annotations Tab helps you increase the visibility of your promotional emails by displaying rich visual elements such as product images, deal badges, and offer cards, directly in the Gmail inbox. These annotations appear in the Promotions tab, increasing email visibility and engagement without any cost.

Prerequisites

Before setting up Gmail annotations, ensure the following:

  • Emails should appear at the top of the Promotions tab. Follow Gmail’s guidelines for email classification.
  • The official Gmail application must be used.
  • For Single Image Preview and Product Carousel, your sender domain and subdomain must be shared with Google and added to their whitelist. Send your sender domain and subdomain details to [email protected] and request whitelisting before enabling these annotation types.

How to Enable Email Annotations

Step 1: Create a New Email Content

  1. Go to Content > Marketing > Email > New.
  2. Select a type from the options: Rich Text Editor, Code Editor, or Email Builder.
  3. Fill in the Content Name and choose a folder.
  4. Click Next to proceed to the content section.

Step 2: Activate Annotations

  1. Locate the Annotation toggle in the content section.
  2. Switch it on to enable annotations.

Building Email Annotations

Annotations can display the following features in the Promotions tab:

1. Product Carousel

Displays multiple product images in a horizontal, scrollable carousel. Use this option to showcase multiple products within a single promotion.

Product Details:

  • Image URL: Add a product image (PNG or JPEG, HTTPS only). All images must use the same aspect ratio (4:5, 1:1, or 1.91:1).
  • URL: Enter the landing page URL for the product or campaign.
  • Headline (optional): Add a short 1–2 line description.
  • Price (optional): Enter the product price.
  • Currency (optional): Use ISO 4217 format (e.g. USD, EUR, TRY).
  • Discount Value (optional): Enter the discount amount.
  • Position (optional): Define the display order in the carousel.

Notes:

  • You can add up to 10 products.
  • All images must be unique.

After filling in the details, click Apply to save the product carousel.

2. Single Image Preview

Displays a single large hero image in the Promotions Tab. Use this option to highlight a single campaign or flagship product.

Image Details:

  • Image URL: Add a PNG or JPEG image (HTTPS only, 1.91:1 aspect ratio).
  • URL: Enter the promotion landing page.
  • Headline (optional): Add a short description.
  • Price (optional)
  • Currency (optional)
  • Discount Value (optional)

Notes:

  • Only one image can be used per email.
  • The same image is shown to all recipients.

After filling in the details, click Apply to save the single image preview.

3. Deal Badge

Displays a green badge next to the email subject line in the inbox.Highlights a key offer such as a discount or free shipping.

Deal Details (at least one is required):

  • Description: Short offer summary (keep it very brief).
  • Discount Code: Promotional code to be used at checkout.
  • Availability:
    • Start Date (recommended): Promotion start date and time (ISO 8601).
    • End Date (required if used): Promotion end date and time (ISO 8601).
    • Example (Turkey time – UTC+3): 2025-03-31T23:59:00+03:00

Notes:

  • Badge appearance is automatically generated by Gmail.
  • Do not keep expired dates in the annotation. If an email includes a promotion end date that is already in the past when the email is sent, Gmail treats the promotion as expired.

After filling in the details, click Apply to save the deal badge.

4. Offer Card

Displays a Gmail-generated visual card summarizing the promotion. Provides maximum visibility by showing the offer in the Promotions Tab and potentially inside the email.

Offer Details:

  • Description: Brief summary of the offer.
  • Offer Page URL (recommended): Specific landing page for the promotion.
  • Merchant Homepage URL: Use only if no specific offer page exists.
  • Discount Code (optional)
  • Availability (recommended):
    • Start Date: Promotion start date and time (ISO 8601).
    • End Date: Promotion end date and time (ISO 8601).
    • Example (Turkey time – UTC+3): 2025-03-31T23:59:00+03:00

After filling in the details, click Apply to save the offer card.

If you are using the Code Editor, you can manually add Schema.org markup to your email HTML. Dengage preserves this markup and does not remove it during save.

Final eligibility and rendering are determined by Gmail and may vary based on sender reputation and campaign content.

Limitations

  • Gmail Annotations Tab features work only for Gmail accounts.
  • The feature only displays in the Promotions tab.
  • Display and placement are fully controlled by Gmail.
  • Meeting all technical requirements does not guarantee display for every user.
